The ‘Majhi Kanya Bhagyashree Scheme’ is a prestigious government initiative designed by the Women and Child Development Department, Government of Maharashtra, for the welfare of the girl child by supporting her in completing education, reducing the chance of child marriages, among providing financial security to them so that they can improve their livelihoods and quality of life. This scheme is only applicable for only the first two girl children.
If the first child is a girl and the second child is a boy, or vice versa, then in such a case, the benefits of this scheme will not be provided. Under this scheme, a fixed deposit certificate will be provided at the birth of a girl child, and parents can withdraw the interest accrued on the principal amount every six years. By presenting this scheme government aims to ensure that every girl has safe and secure access to fulfill their dreams without any financial issues and does not need to depend on others for their survival in the state.

Objective of Majhi Kanya Bhagyashree Yojana
The main objective of this scheme is to provide financial independence to girl children, mainly focusing on improving the quality of life of thousands of girls by providing financial support and encouraging them towards education, promoting gender equality in society. Under this scheme, the government provides financial support to only two daughters of the same family.
Eligibility Criteria
To be a part of this scheme, an applicant needs to first meet the following eligibility criteria:-
- Applicant must be a permanent resident of Maharashtra.
- Applicant must be a girl child born on or after 01 August 2017.
- Applicant must belong to BPL and APL families.
- Applicant is a girl child, and twin girls born in the second delivery can also be eligible to apply for the scheme.
- Annual income of the applying girl’s family must be less than Rs 7.5 lakh per annum from all sources of income
- Applicant must have a separate account that will be open for each girl child, in case of two girl children.
Ineligibility Criteria
- Residents from states other than Maharashtra are ineligible to apply for the scheme.
- Boys are eligible to apply.
- Parents who have a third child are ineligible.
- Annual income exceeding the limit of Rs 7.5 lakh is not eligible to apply for the scheme.
Benefits of the Kanya Bhagyashree Scheme
- Fixed Deposit:- Under this scheme government provides a fixed deposit of Rs 50,000 to one girl child.
- Two Girls:– In case of two girl children, each girl will receive a fixed deposit of Rs 25,000.
- Withdrawal Time:- On further reinvesting of principal amount, beneficiaries can withdraw the 6-year Interest and principal amount on attaining the age of 18 years.
- Overdraft Facility:- Under this scheme savings bank account offers an overdraft facility of Rs 5,000 along with the accident insurance coverage of up to Rs 1 lakh.

Key Features
- Two Girl Children:- The benefits of this scheme will be provided only to families with one or two girl children. Families with three girl children are unable to receive the scheme benefits except parents have twin daughters in their second delivery.
- Condition:- There is a condition in which if a girl gets married before she turns 18 or she drops out of school, her parents will not receive the benefits of this scheme. In such cases, the amount deposited in the beneficiary’s bank account will be deposited into the Maharashtra government account.
- Submit Family Planning Certificate:- It is necessary for a guardian must submit a family planning certificate within 6 months after having two daughters to be eligible.
- Target Groups:- This scheme is only available for girl children in the state.
